Strawberries and Rhubarb mark the beginning of the Summer season here in Northern Michigan. A slurry of the fruits over vanilla ice cream was my favorite dessert when I was a kid. For the longest time I thought that was the only way to prepare them. I also thought that the only people who could appreciate this old-fashioned treat were old-fashioned people. I was the only one of my friends who liked it.
Imagine my delight to find that this is one of those quintessential flavor combinations beloved by much of Germany. And there are so many ideas for using rhubarb for sweet and savory dishes.
